It's been said that "truth, like beauty, is very much in the eye of the beholder" and those of you familiar with this post modern paradigm will also appreciate that any definition of art can be equally subjective.

As an undergraduate I was subjected to the, now standard, induction for all art students which sought to deconstruct the "popular myth" of art as our lecturers saw it. We were told that there existed no rigorous definition of art beyond merely describing it as "that which we understand as art" or "that which hangs in a gallery". Every "popular myth" of art, we were told, had so many exceptions to it so as to prohibit its validity.

Of course, there are many things which our society recognizes as art that are neither beautiful nor could we argue that they involved a significant degree of skill on the part of the artist. On famous example is Marcel Decamps' installation of an upturned urinal entitled "Fountain" which is not something that many of us in layman's-land would recognize as art were we not told that it is art and were we not to find it in an art gallery labeled as such. And yet, Decamps' Fountain is considered a seminal work of the early nth Century.

So, am I now trying to persuade you that your toilet is art and that your toilet seat is the frame? No, not because I don't believe that your humble look is framed art (that's for you to decide), but because I don't believe that intellectual persuasion towards a doctrine of art is ethical or fruitful.

It appears to me futile to argue for a definition of art or seek to produce a litmus test for recognizing it. However, I do think that there is some value at least in challenging people's idea of what is art and encouraging people to frame the art all around you.

Rather than bore you with an intense argument on this subject I will merely provide an example for you to consider.

An art dealer friend of mine through whose hands have passed works of art worth six figures has upon his study wall, not a great work by a recognized master but a worthless looking paper invoice from his water cooler supplier firm. The invoice would be nothing above the ordinary to any casual viewer and its place upon his wall would at first seem bizarre. However, what is significant to him about this particular invoice is that the seemingly random system regenerated number of that particular invoice is the exact date of his daughter's birthday. Add to this that the company happens to be called Gemini which is his daughter's Christian name. The logo for the company is an image of a young girl holding a star in her outstretched hands. The invoice is attached to a pencil crayon drawing his daughter did at school based on a poem the teacher had read to them in class about God. The picture she has drawn is of a star in an outstretched hand with the words written underneath "He holds my world in His hands".

Nothing but a chain of happy coincidence you might say. And, of course, these details are only of significance to him. However, when, as in this case, the object holds huge significance for an individual it becomes as wealthy and significant as any great artwork in any gallery. And when that art is framed within the context of something else we cherish (in this case the child's artwork) the work becomes art purely by the framing and yet the irony is that we only framed it because we first recognized it as art.

Defining Abstract Art

The term "abstract art" is like the term "modern music" in the sense that it is a very broad umbrella sheltering a wide variety of art. But like "abstract math," the general sense of the term is that it is the opposite of the concrete, or "realism." At one end of the continuum is a painting of a violin so perfectly rendered that we feel we could reach into the frame, pick up the instrument, and play it. At the other end is a canvas painted pure white or black all over. There is nothing in it to reach in and touch.
A simple, common definition of "abstract art" is "not realistic." Yet many artists who call their work abstract, actually do have a subject in mind when they paint. They take a figure or landscape and simplify it, exaggerate it, or stylize it in some way. They are not trying to imitate nature, but to use nature as a starting off point. Color, line, and form are more important to them than the details of the actual subject matter. They want to give a sense or feel for the subject rather than an exact replication.
Historically, the term "abstract" has been associated with a variety of art movements. The cubism of Picasso, Braque and Cezanne was a geometrical abstraction. In the United States, a group also known as the New York school of action painters was defined by critics as "abstract expressionists." Yet the individuals in this group varied greatly in their approaches. Jackson Pollock did overall drip paintings. Mark Rothko painted shimmering color field canvases based on a simple square pattern. Willem de Kooning did not abandon subject matter like the others, but abstracted the female figure in much of his work.
Art that has no intentional beginnings in any subject matter is sometimes referred to as "non-objective," or "non-representational." A related term is "minimalism," or the tendency to take as much away from the painterly surface of the canvas as possible. A white square painted on a white background is an example of minimalism. The end result is not so much the point as the daring it took to get there.
"Modern art" is another term commonly used to refer to abstract art, though originally this term was used to differentiate the experimenters of the twentieth century from the traditional European painters and sculptors. Thus, "modern art" began over seventy years ago, and is no longer new. Many movements in art have come and gone since then. For example, "pop art" incorporates popular culture such as comics and movie stars. Well-known artists of this genre include Andy Warhol, who painted Cambell's soup cans and portraits of Marilyn Monroe; and Jasper Johns, who did a series of flag paintings.
"Contemporary art" is another one of those terms that covers a wide variety of art. The best definition of "contemporary" is the work of any living artist, though the term has also been used to mean art that you would hang in a contemporary home. This sense of contemporary is more like the term "modern," in that it means the opposite of "traditional." Thus, "contemporary art" is also sometimes used to mean "abstract art."
Another way to define the term "abstract art" is to enter it as a search term on Google or Yahoo and look at the results. There will be millions of them, proving that the term is used today to cover a vast amount of art. I use the term "abstract art" to define my own painting because I know that people who love my art tend to define it this way. They often find me by entering the term on Google. Others use the term "modern art" or "contemporary art" to find me.
So where does that leave us in our definition of abstract art? Like most definitions of art movements, the answer is complex. We can look at it historically from an art critic's perspective, or use it as the general public would, to mean something other than traditional realistic representation.

Decorating Your Home With Art Deco Design

There are many style options you can choose from to decorate your home in today's day and age, even options that one would never have considered back in the 20th century or even in the past few decades. This includes one style from the 20th century that seems to be regaining some popularity recently, and that style is art deco.
Back in the 1920s to 1930s, art deco design was very popular. In that time period, art deco was considered to be functional, elegant, and ultra modern. Art deco designers would often reject the traditional ideas and materials of decoration and interior design, instead opting to use more unusual materials such as ebony, marble, stainless steel, lacquer, aluminum, inlaid wood, sharkskin, and zebra skin.
The use of harder, metallic materials to construct the furniture used in art deco design were to reflect the celebration of the machine age. This is why the process of Lacquering (or giving the furniture a glossy finish) was created.
In addition, art deco designers liked to emphasize clean lines and geometric shapes. Strong, sharp angles were often added to the layout of the room to emphasize the art deco interior design.

Realize that there is often a pyramidal effect on the rooms that use the art deco design, thanks to the Aztec and Egyptian elements that influence art deco.
Giving your room a gradual lessening of form can present a perception of strength and endurance to those who experience your room. That is why this type of interior design was very popular back during the days of the Great Depression, as people tried to display their financial strength and stability in that dark economic period.
There are other ways to emphasize the art deco interior design in your room.
One way is to add more furniture pieces and accessories that have black and green tones to your room, as black and green are primary colors in art deco design.
Adding intriguing and unusual accessories, such as distinctive artwork, is another way to add to the art deco flavor of your room.
Another way is to have wall-to-wall carpet that coordinates well with the art deco design of your room. This would include having neutral color carpet to help soften up the intensity of the art deco interior design.
You should also pay attention to the lighting in your room, as it should match up well with art deco decorating. Lamps with geometric glass shades often work best with art deco interior design.
In addition to artificial lighting, you should also consider the natural lighting from your windows and the window treatments. With art deco design, going with ordinary-looking drapes may be your best option, though if you want to have people focus on your window style, you could consider using vintage drapes instead.
Decorating your home with art deco design involves using materials that are different from traditional materials, such as ebony, marble, stainless steel, sharkskin, and zebra skin. Lacquering is also a key component in art deco design. Art deco also emphasizes clean lines and geometric shapes, especially strong, sharp angles. The History and Copyright of Clip Art

Clip art is a collection of graphic images of various shapes, sizes and colors, including maps, diagrams, illustrations, cartoons and designs, available to you for copying and pasting into your own page layout. You can shop for any activity that needs an image, such as business presentations, birthday/wedding invitations, sports events, holiday greetings, etc. People associate clip art with web decoration, but the images are also available in printed format. Clip art consists exclusively of illustrations, and excludes photographic images.
Clip Art History
Clip art started as reproductions of simple line art drawings. These drawings were pressed full size onto a board where text or additional images were used. The board would be referred to as a 'mechanical' and ready for photographing.
When personal computers were introduced on the market, the average users needed art to spice up their projects. The clip art industry was initiated with the creation of desktop publishing. In 1983 VCN Excuvision introduced a package of clip art for pc users, and in 1984 Macintosh followed up with its own release, graphical user interface (GUI), a term that has become synonymous with web images. Also in 1984, the package of illustrations called "ClickArt" was released.
It was not until 1985 when Aldus released Page Maker 5 for desktop publishing that clip art came into its own. Aldus made it possible for the home user to produce professional quality publishing, which rendered clip art very popular and in great demand. People started producing business presentations, newsletters, invitations, and brochures. Technology allowed for simple designs and basic colors.
Steady progress was made in both home computing and clip art. In the early 90's, the production of cd-roms with an array of electronic art became a necessity. Microsoft began to include clip art in their products. Another company, T/Maker, started producing massive amounts of digital art. Some of their copyright free collections held over 500,000 images.
Through the years, clip art has been a steady add-on for computer programs and a revenue generator for companies. In the 2000's, the emergence of the internet as a sales tool was recognized. Clip art on the web was sold by reputable websites that are still around today. Clipart.com, GraphicsFactory.com and Weddingclipart.com have online libraries for sale, allowing it to be sold not only as bundled software from computer companies, but also as individual pieces in a collection of illustrations. Moreover, subscriptions to clip art websites are increasing at a fast pace. Clip art is a mini industry that is proving to be self reliant and here to stay.

The legal aspect regarding the usage of images on the web has long been a grey issue. The web started out with text only, left-justified, a warehouse of articles. It was not until it was well established that images, buttons and graphics were introduced. Unfortunately, by that time, the action of downloading images for personal reuse was rampant. Subsequently, companies and their lawyers have now become vigilant with respect to the issue of copyrights.
The dictionary defines copyright as ownership over a creation. Whether that creation is literary, audio, musical, or has any other artistic attribute, its ownership belongs to the creator. That copyright is in force for the life of the creator and 50 years after. Just because some of these creations are posted to the web does not mean that the item is in the public domain. Another great misconception involves the common belief that if you download it and change it by adding or subtracting from the creation, it then becomes yours. That is wrong. You must obtain written permission from the owner to reproduce or change clip art.
The terms for usage are dictated by the creator of the company who owns the clip art. The reproduction terms may be as simple as a few lines or as complicated as the usage for major companies like Nike and Ford.
What you can and cannot use
You may use clip art images when it is indicated that they are 'free to use' on commercial and personal web pages.
Before copying an image for your use, ensure yourself that it is free to use on a personal web site. However, if you have any advertisement on your website, the copied image then becomes commercial and therefore cannot be used on that particular website, unless it is specified that it can be used on a commercial website.
Linkware images allow you usage of the image if you link back to the creator's page.
This issue is not one of entitlement but one of ownership. If you are caught by the owner using his image, legal action can be initiated, forcing you to remove it and pay for past usage. Be wary because the legal rulings with respect to clip art copyrights are far from being lenient.

The Art of Collecting: Tips for Starting a Contemporary Art Collection
Don't be intimidated! Visit as many art galleries as you can and ask questions. If the gallery owner or staff is not accessible or open to your questions, move on.

• Get on the mailing lists of the art galleries you like so that you'll be invited to openings, special events and lectures.
• Keep a log or journal and jot down the names of emerging artists that stop you, move you, inspire you, excite you. Keep in mind that buying art is a lot like "falling in love".
• Do your homework. Make sure to get a bio or CV and artist statement. What is their background, education? Where have they shown? What collections are they in?
• Subscribe to a few of the major art magazines and blogs such as Art in America, Art News, Art & Auction, Art Forum, Frieze and blogs like Gallery Hopper and Art Addict or sites like Art Log and ArtSlant.
• Visit the International Art Fairs for an opportunity to see which galleries and genres of art most appeal to you. It's a great opportunity to see a lot of recent work from galleries from around the world. Some of the best Fairs are the Affordable Art Fair, Red Dot, Scope, Pulse which have annual shows in New York, Miami, London and Basel.
• The right relationship is everything. Like the one with your dealer. A good dealer will advise you, bid for you at auctions, and let you know when good stuff or new work by your favorite artist is available. According to the AADA: ''No great collection was ever formed without a dealer.''
• Join several art museums and find out when the docents or curators are giving a tour or attend a lecture by visiting curators.
• Attend auctions of your favorite genres of art at Christies or Sotheby's or one of the other major auction houses.
• Attend local studio tours in your local town or city, such as TOAST in Tribeca or ArtEast in Dutchess County, New York.
• When you make a purchase, make sure to get proper documentation from the gallery, including a bill of sale, letter of authenticity and artist statement and resume.
• Make sure the gallery specifies if it's an original work of art or limited edition, and not a reproduction.
• Ask to meet the artist. Artists regularly attend openings and other events and many of them enjoy sharing their inspiration with collectors and art lovers.
• Speak to your gallery about proper framing, installation and care of your artwork. And make sure to insure your artwork if you spend $1000 or more.
• If you need to crate, package and ship your artwork, make sure to get advice from the gallery. Not all shippers are reliable and knowledgeable about packing and protecting art.

Collecting art is an act of self-discovery. Take your time, but don't be afraid to jump in and make your first acquisition. When you live with art you love, you transform your life. But be careful, because collecting art can be very seductive and addictive. Enjoy the adventure!

Denver Art Galleries

Denver is fast emerging as the hot new 'art and culture destination' on the cultural map of USA. It may not have reached the cultural heights of New York yet but it's morphed into an art and culture capital of the Rockies anyway. From one art gallery back in the 60s to over 120 commercial art galleries now, with a program in place for Public Art valued at over $ 23 million in year 2006 and an impressive collection of over 300 public artworks installed all over the city, while most cities have two or four important museums on its city roster; Denver has an impressive list of more than fifteen and counting. That's not all, most cities boast of one or two art districts at the most, while Denver has six thriving ones!
The credit for this entire cultural renaissance goes back to a number of factors. First and foremost to the residents themselves who back in 1988 voted and passed a 0.1 percent sales tax to fund cultural activity around the entire metropolitan of Denver. The Scientific and Cultural Facilities District tax raises around $ 40 million annually for local art, theater, music and dance organizations and natural and cultural history sites.
The credit also goes to ever-popular two-term mayor John Hickenlooper who is an art buff in his own right and has supported arts and culture across the board; he is responsible for the major cultural coup of getting the Clyfford Still Museum established in Denver, (ground breaking ceremony planned for December 14th 2009). Still (1904-1980) is a world-renowned much sought after Expressionist artist - a single Still painting recently sold for over $20 million at an auction for example.
Mayor Federico Pena is credited with the establishment of Denver's Public Art Program back in 1998 via an Executive Order, ensuring that 1 percent of any capital improvement project over 1 million should be set aside for art in the design and construction of these projects.
Denver may have started with one art district on the west end of the Platte River, near downtown but now it boasts of six. Raised rents and gentrification of newer art districts from Broadway to lower downtown (LoDo) to Santa Fe to RiNo to Belmar to Tennyson Street to Cherry Creek North has meant the dispersion of local artists, multiple art districts and decentralized art community which in turn has contributed to a thriving art scene. The art movement in Denver is not cut-throat and competitive like most arty environments of large metropolitan cities, nor is it judgmental and cynical, instead it's characterized as open, collaborative and participative willing to inject a note of humor and whimsy in its selections. The whole city contributes from its art and culture organizations to its residents to its city government and art institutions to its art community, making it a fun and vibrant city intent on having a good time.
This could be because as Hickenlooper once put it, Denver is unusual and unique in that people move there not for jobs but for its superior 'quality of life,' and a 'vigorous cultural scene' is a big part of that expectation.
Some of the milestone cultural capital projects of Denver that opened between the period of four years 2005-2009 are: Elli Caulkins Opera House, The Lab at Belmar, The Denver Art Museum's new wing Fredric C. Hamilton Building, Center for Empowering Learning and Living, a project of the Mizel Museum located at the Civic Center, Museum of Contemporary Art, and Clyfford Still Museum.
Not that, Denver was devoid of culture before this, the city already had an impressive base of arts and culture, for example, Denver Performing Arts Complex featuring ten performance spaces on a four-block, 12-acre site, Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Denver Museum of Nature and Science (DMNS), it is the fifth largest natural history museum in the nation, the Denver Zoo, it is the fourth most popular zoo in the country, Denver Botanic Gardens, it is one of the top ten western gardens in the nation. Denver hosts one of the largest Martin Luther King, Jr. Parades, Cinco de Mayo celebrations and Native American pow-wows in the county, not to mention the Cherry Creek Arts Festival, it is number one arts festival in county based on artists' sales.
Denver gets a high score based on one survey of marketable, discretionary visitors for the city's choice for entertainment, pro sports events, theatre and the arts, nightlife, the variety of things to see and do, museums, art galleries, parks, gardens and golf courses, interesting architecture, landmarks, shopping, dining, recreation and outdoorsy, mountain activities like skiing, hiking, biking, kayaking and what not. So what's not to like when you drop by to catch an art show, you might get more than you bargained for which is all to the good. More fun for you!

If there's something hung in the wall, it should be placed high enough such that it's not easily reachable. If the art is placed too low your child may be able to reach it or kick it, thus causing it to fall off, hurting himself You don't want to wake up in the middle of the night to your screaming baby just to find a half ton piece of framed art squashing him in his cot.
Avoid framing the art
To be on the safe side, it's best not to frame the art pieces. This may make the art seem poster-like, but it's better safe than sorry. A framed art piece may add unnecessary weight and may cause injury if it dislodges from the wall and falls on your child.
Choose small art pieces
If you still want to frame it, choose a light weight frame that won't weigh it down. Pick art pieces that are small in size - that way even after it's framed, it doesn't weigh a lot. Use plastic frames that are light weight. Make sure that the art piece is protected by a piece of acrylic and not glass. You can also be creative and make the frames yourself, saving money in the process.
Keep it out of reach of little hands
When hanging art on the wall, place it at the correct height so that your child can't reach it easily. Even if the art work is not framed, your child could easily reach out to it and cause damage by tearing it.
Don't display framed pictures on the shelf or table
You might have seen interior design magazines where small art pieces or pictures are framed in a photo frame and then placed on a ledge or on top of a table. Presenting art this way is creative and may be more suitable for an adult's bedroom, but avoid placing art in this way in your child's room - especially so if he's still a baby or a toddler. Again, safety is the concern here - a framed picture placed loosely on a table top could easily be flung off and sent flying across the room, accidentally or otherwise.
Don't place a mirror in your child's room
It is obvious the kind of damage or injury this could cause if it were to fall off and break. Remove all mirrors in the room - your child doesn't need them.

Abstract Expressionism - The Basic Idiom of Art

Ever since the cave dwellers started creating art on the walls of Southern France, art has always been about abstraction. Even the most "Realist" of arts is after all an abstraction, a model of the "real" thing which the artist sees in a way, he deems fit. If some found this sight in strict measurements, perspective, and proportions, such as Durer or Da Vinci, some found it in forms and shadows, such as Rembrandt and Gainsborough. Every artist "distorts" reality, not as much by design, but by default.
Abstraction is an inherent process in art. It, in fact, is an integral part of the way we visualize things in our brains. It is a part of analysis, and synthesis, which leaps across all the humanity. It is as "mundane" as our daily lives. What lifts 'Abstraction' beyond the ordinary is 'Expressionism!' Art actually is at the very crux of its complexity, a dual play of these two entities, much like the yin and yang of the Orient.
Although 'Abstract Expressionism' lies at the very heart of the matters of art, it can be narrowed down to the particular "genres" of art forms. These genres are known particularly to alter the existing and "taken for granted" forms & shapes. The alteration results in a very different texture, which is at once innovative and familiar. For example, an orange is always spherical in shape. True, but what if it is pulled, pushed, and beaten in to another topological entity, such as a biscuit box? Would it still remain an orange? One might argue that its not "real" but then the "real Orange" that one claims to see is also an abstract expression of mind.
It is this dogma of "reality," most of the early 19th and 20th century artists have broken under the broad umbrella of "Abstract Expressionism." What began as a deliberate alteration of perspective by the "Impressionist" painters, such as Monet and Renoir, became a flood of intentional distortion by "Surrealists," "Cubists," and their ilk. Picasso is considered the quintessential "abstract" painter, making paintings, which were in a way not quite an art to many. However, he puts it eloquently as, "Others try to fool the eye, I try to fool the mind." A better definition of art is not known.
Art's greatest achievement has been that it has never been a slave to "reality," it has always been about "Abstraction" and "Expressionism," even when these fancy words did not exist. That is the underlying, yet the most misunderstood language of communication, the art of expression and the expression of art. Analysis and synthesis of "Abstract Expressionism" is not a part of art, it is "the" art.

Abstract expressionism art is often compared to poetry, because like a poem gives something of what the poet's feelings are, this kind of art also reveals the feelings and attitudes of the artist. This art style started in 1911 by the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky, born in 1866, and who painted the first pure abstract works. He claimed that 'Abstract expressionism art places a new world, which on the surface has nothing to do with "reality," next to the "real" world'.
With the Great Depression of the 1930's together with the Second World War, other artists also wanted a visual language that would reveal the horrors they saw in their rapidly changing world. The language of abstract art meant they could communicate thoughts and emotions; they wanted to find new ways to express their changing world which the 20th century brought along, and these new ideas were reflected in art.
A Combination of Art which Offers Longevity and Creativity
Matisse and Picasso had already begun to move away from traditional painting techniques and starting with abstraction in their work. Picasso has had a tremendous influence on the course of art, and when he first appeared on the Paris scene in 1900, artists were still following the principle that there should be some relationship between what they put on canvas and the object from which the painting was derived.
Picasso though had begun with abstract art and was painting objects as interlocking geometrical forms of color and light. Soon everything he did involved a maze of forms and angles, often with no similarity to its visual reality.
Picasso himself stated 'we no longer wanted to fool the eye; we wanted to fool the mind', and this step led to modern art as we know it today,. The change was among the most far reaching in painting since the Renaissance. Artists were no longer painting what they saw, but rather interpretations of what they were seeing.
